Review:
C.S. Lewis wrote this series of books shortly after World War II. This is the first book and the first to be made into a movie. The Pevensie children - Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter - have been sent to the countryside to live with an elderly professor. Their father is fighting in the war and their mother wants them out of London and safe in the country. The children are getting used to their new surroundings and exploring the house. Lucy discovers an empty room with only a wardrobe in it. She goes inside only to be taken to a place called Narnia. Dwarfs, witches, talking animals, centaurs and fawns, inhabit this place. The evil White Witch, Jadis (Tilda Swinton) has placed Narnia under her spell and made the inhabitants live with winter year round. The real leader, Aslan (Liam Neeson), has returned to fight Jadis to bring Narnia back to its normal, peaceful existence. There are religious themes in the movie. Humans are spoken of as sons of Adam and daughters of Eve. Aslan sacrifices himself for the good of others and he is resurrected later. The children learn valuable lessons from their visit to Narnia, about themselves and their siblings. There are some scary battle sequences and frightening moments. I think a child should be 8 - 10 to fully understand the movie and not be too frightened. You can judge for your individual children. The special effects and animation are fabulous. Real actors share the screen with computer-generated images. Hopefully, this series of books will be continued to be made into movies and move more people to read, or re-read, the books. Which of the children did you like the best and why? What qualities did each of the children learn while in Narnia?
