this animated film. Otis the cow (Kevin James) and his barnyard friends
like to talk, sing, dance, party and have a good time. They play tricks
on their unsuspecting human owners frequently. The leader of the
barnyard is Ben (Sam Elliott), Otis’ father. Ben tries to teach Otis
the meaning of responsibility and give him the confidence to become the
next leader of the farm animals. One night, coyotes enter the hen house
to steal and eat the hens. Ben manages to scare the pack away but he is
injured and dies in the process. The animals look to Otis to be their
next leader but he is not ready. Otis wants to leave the barnyard to
avoid the responsibility of being the leader. He comes to realize that
his father’s words were true, “A strong man takes care of himself but a
stronger man takes care of others.” Otis is loyal to his friends and
does take on the task of being the leader. In this movie, a variety of
animal’s talk and act like humans and that is always enjoyable for
children to watch. These barnyard animals are no different. The cows
are man-cows and have udders, which may confuse children, as all cows
are female. There are some good values to be learned in an entertaining
manner in this movie. Why doesn’t Otis listen to his father in the
beginning? What does it take for Otis to understand what his father was
trying to teach him?
