10 Best and Worst Movies of 2003

Best Movies
1. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
A milestone in filmmaking for it’s popularity through all 3 movies.

2. Mystic River
A sad story told beautifully and acted superbly by Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon.

3. The Last Samurai
This epic story supplied the heart that was missing from “Master and Commander”.

4. Seabiscuit
A horse that gave hope to a nation during the Depression. Tobey McGuire, Jeff Bridges and especially William H. Macy were fabulous.

5. Pirates of the Caribbean
This movie has been seen by people from 3 to 90. It was on the top 20 list of money making movies in theatres for 20 weeks.

6. Finding Nemo
The best animated picture of the year with great color and the perfect voiceovers by Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres.

7. Big Fish Director Tim Burton shows us a marvelous fairy tale about a man and his son finding each other.

8. Cold Mountain
An epic movie showing how difficult the Civil War was for soldiers and for those left behind. Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger were superb.

9. Bend It Like Beckham A small movie from England that focused on the cultural differences between an English girl and an Indian girl who both wanted to play soccer against their parent’s wishes.

10. Love Actually
The best romantic comedy of 2003 with 6 romances going on at one time.

Honorable Mention
School of Rock – Jack Black rocks in this sentimental film about a man who hates kids being a substitute teacher.
The Cooler – William H. Macy, Alec Baldwin and Maria Bello in a story about a man whose luck is so bad he is hired by a casino to bring bad luck to winners.

Worst Movies
(Or most disappointing)
1.
Gigli
No one liked Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’ movie or understood it.

2.
Kill Bill- Volume 1
Otherwise known as “Blood Spatter” by anyone who saw it. Quentin Tarantino’s film did not live up to “Pulp Fiction” and was as bloody as he could make it.

3.
Irreversible A French film that won awards in its country with Monica Bellucci who is brutally raped onscreen.

4.
Boat Trip A terrible movie where Cuba Gooding, Jr. goes on a gay cruise by accident.

5.
Masked & Anonymous
Bob Dylan’s movie with cameos by many Hollywood stars but no one understood it.

6.
Underworld Kate Beckinsale made a bad choice in taking this part. Vampires and werewolves were not exciting in this movie.

7.
In the Cut
Meg Ryan’s attempt at a dramatic part fell way short. The story was not that good and neither was she.

8.

Matrix Revolution The first Matrix was so good, the second was pretty good and the third one ran out of steam. Disappointing at best.

9.
Texas Chain Saw Massacre
This horror movie was better left not remade from the original. Blood, body parts and death. Not a fun time at the theatre for me.

10.
From Justin to Kelly
The American Idol show was so popular they decided to throw together a movie with the winners. Unfortunately, the writing was bad and so was the acting.
